Geeks learning the chinese language

June 19th, 2006 | Category: China, Life

As Poeloq points out in the Th!nkNerd Blog (german) to learn the chinese language seems to be more easy for geeks then some of our western languages. I think he has a good point and regret not to have lerned more about this language when I was there.

He also did mention Chinese Pod which is great for learning chinese while listening to the Podcast. For instance – as I do – in the Berlin subway.

Chinese Computer Brand Naming

May 14th, 2006 | Category: China, Informatics

When thinking about chinese brands many western people do actually think about the brands they get to know from advertising campains for the western market. Interestingly some companies do have different names – with even different meaning – for the chinese market.

For example Lenovo is not a chinese name as you may think – it is a brand specially adapted to the western marked meaning "Le" from legend and "Novo" for new. As it was former known as the "Legend Group" (src: Wikipedia).

But as chinese friends pointed out the chinese word is Lián Xiǎng (联想) meaning "associate", or "joined thinking". It’s meaning is also not so far away from the actual chinese word for computer which is diàn nǎo (电脑) meaning "electronic brain". It is also worth mentioning how well the brand "Think Pad" fits into that idea… .

So it is most interesting how all chinese words can have a meaning to be used even for commercial names. And although the modern chinese see a big value in lerning and speaking english they still love they’re language to create new meaningful words for english vocabulary as you would not see it in Germany where we just take english word into every day language and even create english words for new inventions.

Nightly Shanghai

March 18th, 2006 | Category: China

From today there are just 2 full days left for me to stay in this town. So I did something I planned for months but never really managed. I took a camera and went out to document some of the thousand interesting luminous advertisments.

NanJingLu

After taking half a GB of data just for NanJingLu I first have to sort and convert the most interesting stuff out. Tomorrow I start writing a bigger ariticle about Blinking Shanghai into my Wiki. Since the Aurora Tower display was off today I will have to provide some older pictures and maybe a video on that topic.

Back from San Ya

March 14th, 2006 | Category: China

After 9 days of relaxation and joy I came back to Shanghai Sunday night. Although the temperature difference was around 20 °C the way of life between Shanghai and Hainan is more different.

Basically I found that life and the people in Hainan are really relaxed and easy just like in southern europe where people enjoy siesta.

Okay, I guess I’ll write more about the trip during the week.

First Post – let’s get it started

March 02nd, 2006 | Category: China, Informatics, Life

Hi everybody. This will be my Weblog. So what am I going to publish here and who am I anyway? Well, as a student of Computer Engineering I will most likely write about my job and that means mostly technical issues. Beside that I am currently in Shanghai for an 5 months Internship – what makes me writing about what I experience here. My work in a small IT company was an interesting experience, that I could share with others – showing how this kind of companies runs in China. The next point is life in Shanghai in general. – As my internship is nearly over by the time of writing this (2 weeks left) I’ll have to write most of my postings in retrospective. So lets hope I won’t be to lazy to create some content and please send loots of fedback.
